Book Challenge-Help Needed!

I was blog-hopping and came across this one. http://exlibrisbb.blogspot.com/search/label/orbis%20terrarum%20challenge
Orbis Terrarum is a reading challenge. Apparently there are many reading challenges going around but this was my first encounter with one. To take up this challenge, you have to read 9 different books by 9 authors from 9 different countries in 9 months. The challenge has already started since April 1st and ends in December. I want to sign up but I'm having trouble thinking of the 9 different authors. I can think of a few off the top of my head but I'd love it if whoever reads this sent in their suggestions. I don't think I'll have problems finding Indian and American authors, even British. But it'd be great if you could suggest authors from some other countries. Time is running out......

Chitra: Thanks for your input. I read Tolstoy way back in school. Loved La Pierre's books.. And Khaled Hosseini's books are of course wonderful .I've read both of his. Currently I'm reading "Queen Of Dreams" by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, though not as part of the challenge.
Lalita: What a pleasant surprise!! I'm flattered that you liked my blog. THanks for the suggestions. I have read Kundera though and found it quite "unbearable" but then it's a personal opinion. The others sound interesting, will try to get them.
Snippets: Thanks, noted the name.

Nigeria has produced some excellent writers, so please dont miss them. I have just started "Half of a yelow sun" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which has great reviews. If you want a smaller book bacause of the time limit, Chinua Achebe's "Things fall apart" would be good.

Anu: I didn't know about Nigerian authors. Thanks. I've got the names down. Will let you know when I find and read the book(s).
Priya: Thanks but (unfortunately??) I've already read 2 of the 3 books you mentioned. I think I have Lajja in my personal collection back in India. I read "My Feudal Lord" when I was in Sing. (it shakes you up, doesn't it?) and while I haven't read Marianne Pearl's book, I did see the movie. Did you?
